Suzhou, China

To design a pop-up temporary structure to showcase Suzhou, a major city in China, with 3500 square feet at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur. The temporary exhibition will showcase the culture, history and environment of Suzhou for three months from April to June. The purpose of the exhibition is to promote the ancient city to the locals which have a large ethnic group including Malays, Chinese and Indians. The exhibition is focusing on customer’s experiences through the pop-up spaces in order to attract visitors to visit the city. Visitors are able to experience the food, traditional costumes, local specialty and also the environment of Suzhou in the exhibition. 
View From Facade .

Two walkways are proposed to enter the exhibition in order to avoid from heavy traffic when the exhibition is crowded. The entrance is designed with timber floating wood deck and timber railing as well as some natural elements such as trees, rocks and water features which is inspired from the Suzhou’s environment. On the right side, there is an outdoor floating dining / seating area for visitors to enjoy Suzhou’s traditional food with the environment of the exhibition. This area is designed inspired from Tongli Watertown in Suzhou.  
Reception .

A double volume reception lobby constructed by two 20ft vertical shipping container as a information counter to serve visitors. Visitors are able to enter this area when they need any assistance and there will be a receptionist help serve the visitors. 
This area is designed with full height glass windows and proposed at the center of the exhibition for visitors’ convenience. It is also incorporate with a small coffee / tea point for visitors while they are waiting in this area.
Gazebo / Courtyard .

A small artificial water pond in the middle of interior courtyard behind the reception lobby, with a contemplative gazebo in that. This area is proposed as a seating area mainly for visitors to enjoy opera performances. It is designed as a central garden, features in watery scenery and 1/3 of the whole area is covered with water, inspired from most of the classical gardens in Suzhou which embody the harmonious principles of Chinese garden construction.  
Cafe & Food Display Area .

This area is proposed for visitors to experience the amazingly rich variety of Suzhou’s cuisine. The food stall will provide some simple Suzhou’s traditional food to visitors so they can experience the taste of the local food.
Realistic food sculptures displayed on the wall in food display area to give visitors get close and see clearly to the food exhibit.
Rooftop Seating / Dining Area .

More seating are proposed in dining area which is located on the upper floor of the cafe. Visitors are able to enter this area by using the staircase next to the food display area. This area is divided into indoor and outdoor area which indoor area is covered with roof while the outdoor is designed in open concept. Besides enjoying the food, visitors are able to enjoy the overall view of the exhibition and watch opera performance from this area.
History Display Area .

Provide history and information of Suzhou to visitors especially for those who have zero knowledge about Suzhou. Visitors are able to know more about Suzhou through the LED screen display with pictures and information as well as the dioramas in this area. 
Costume Rental Area .

Offers full-set local traditional costumes rental for visitors to experience the culture of Suzhou. Visitors are able to wear the costumes and walk around in the exhibition so they can feel as they are in Suzhou.
Silk Production Display Area .

Showcase the silk production, silk history, silk products and garments to let more people know and learn about the traditional silk-weaving skill, tools for producing silks, lifespan of silkworm and witness the change of chinese silk.
This area will be designed into two floors where the lower floor will showcase the cocoon variaties and silk fiber, as well as the models that reflects the scene of traditional silkworm breeding. However, the upper floor will be exhibit the traditional weaving loom and silk garments such as wedding dress. 
Su Embroidery Display Area .

To promote and showcase Su embroidery, visitors can enjoy weaving performance on the spot and get close to the detailings of Su embroidery. There are also some embroidery garments displayed in this area. Visitors can have better understand the depth and scope of Chinese culture.
Kunqu Opera Performance Stage .

A small performance stage is proposed on the upper floor of costume rental area in order to attract visitors to watch the performance from most of the areas in the exhibition. The opera performances will held on every weekend.
