Human Rights Watch — Japan Equality Act

Human Rights Watch came to us to create an animated film that would help pass legislation in Japan protecting LGBT people from discrimination. Our goal was to inspire viewers to sign a petition before the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo.

Initial Styleframes
We used a bold color palette that evoked the palette of the Olympic logo and Pride flag.
The palette also helped create a positive feeling to the finished piece, which was a big part of the client's objective. We also kept the forms and shapes large and used color contrast to keep the film noticeable on social.

Animation
A mix of cel-animation, traditional motion graphics and 3D animation was used throughout the piece to give it a unique look and feel. We only used text when necessary, preferring to tell the story through eye-catching visuals that would move the story along and act as seamless transitions.

Baton Breakdown
A breakdown of the baton passing scene, a pivotal part of the animation that showcases
how countries around the world have been passing similar legislation.
