Anna / A Personal Introduction

Back in September 2012 when a bunch of fresh-out-of-highschool First Year architecture students arrived at the GSA, the tutors decided to give us all a proper kick-start...

So, the first ever project project was titled "Who are you?" and we were asked to produce a personal visual introduction through prints on a T-Shirt.

The front was to represent personal qualities and the back – tell more about who and what inspired us to study architecture. And then twe were asked to make a postcard which would capture the essence of it all.
This was my postcard. To sum it up, I felt like coming to The Glasgow School of Art was a new chapter in my life, hence the "wind of change" in my hair, standing in my "personal" T-Shirt in front of the famous Mackintosh's GSA building. And, of course, in black-and-white, which is my favourite color combination.
But you have to agree, it is quite a challenge for clueless 19-year olds to answer the question "Who are you?", right?
I decided honesty was the best policy.

So when working on ideas for the front print of my T, I talked to my friends and family to find out some key words that they felt described me best, and then added my own ideas to the list. In the end, I came up with a long list of different words, and I felt that I could indeed relate to every single one, but I could not pick any that would be more important than others. This is why I put a red question mark over the “word cloud” to represent that I am all of these things but still "in the making" and could not define myself in a single statement.
The back of the t-shirt follows a similar pattern and includes different places I have been to, people I have met or read about and other things, which inspired me greatly to study architecture. The exclamation mark is a symbol for the inspiration and excitement about architecture that was triggered by these different events.
P.S. When people, who know me, see this project they usually say it really does represent me well...
