Boat Building School
Brooklin, ME

This project was for a boat building school in Brooklin Maine. It was a new building as part of a larger complex by the ocean. The program included a main workshop for the boats themselves as well as two smaller workshops for fabricating parts, two classrooms, a library, a lunchroom, a bathroom, and a small store. The project also had to be constructed from timber.
The main idea of the project was the south facing glass façade. The nature of boat building, especially in Maine, is very seasonal. Because of this the main workshop was uninsulated. The windows along the façade would open to allow the sea breeze in during the summer and let in sun to keep the main workshop warmer later into the year. This light exterior was framed by contrasting heavy timber members.
The front 2/5 of the building was the main workshop which was separated from the rest of the building, allowing for the insulated back half to retain more heat. The left corridor was filled by workshops to keep them all in one place while the right corridor was public areas. The classrooms in the middle open to both so they can easily use the resources of both.
The center of the back half of the building was raised up to the level of the front to let light deeper into the center of the plan.
