Alex E.'s profile

2009 - Affective Loop (Philips)

I joined Philips Research high tech campus in 2009 in order to research the effect of biological signals and body motion in human emotions.
I worked with 7 other scientists for about a year and created a sophisticated distributed system with image processing, bluetooth communication and digital signal processing.
Body Tracker was the data gathering and analysis system that connected all pieces of the system together. It comprised of:
1. The thresholds, normalization and activation settings
2. Distributed system connection status
3. Real time positional monitoring
4. Input/Output signal monitoring
I created the body tracking system before Microsoft Kinect was in the market. For that matter I used CamSpace to detect colored markers that the players wore on top of a white custom.
Using 2 cameras I detected the movements of 6 markers and analyzed them in Body Tracker.
Body Tracker sent the motion information to a Flash-based game that was designed by my colleague and engaged the users in an emotional experience that we later analyzed using video footage, signal snapshots and interviews.
