Blue Diamond - A Rare and Sought-After Gemstone

Guyana executive Barry Kevin O ‘Rourke manages mining activities in jungle tracts. Barry Kevin O ‘Rourke and his team deliver results in an industry that supports Guyana’s export-driven economy, seeking out minerals and precious metals such as gold and diamonds.

An ultra-durable mineral, diamonds have many practical uses in industry. A large part of their value also derives from aesthetic qualities. Specific specimens may attain high valuation due to size, color, and type.

One example is the blue diamond, which takes its blue tone from traces of boron within the carbon structure of the stone. The hue varies widely, from light to deep blue, and the diamonds often contain a secondary gray, violet, or green hue.

This blue coloration is extremely rare: Most blue diamonds fall into the Type IIb category that makes up only 0.1 percent of all color diamonds. The only three countries where blue diamonds occur naturally are Australia, India, and South Africa. Sapphires are easy to mistake for blue diamonds, but are a different type of gemstone that get their color from other trace elements.

Reflecting its scarcity and quality, a 15.10-carat gem known as "The De Beers Cullinan Blue” was put up for auction in early 2022. Only the fifth gem above 10 carats ever to be auctioned, the step-cut vivid blue diamond is described as internally flawless and was appraised at $48 million.
