Polaris Projects: RZR 2003 - 2012

At the height of the ATV boom, the Powersports market demanded something different; a vehice that would allow you to share your experiences with someone...sitting beside you versus behind you as an ATV 2-up would ride. The recreational Side x Side division took off for Polaris with the introduction of the 2008 RZR which gave consumers just what they asked for.
- This was my first full vehicle project at Polaris that included exterior, interior, as well as ergonomic packaging and seat design. In addition to design patents, I received 2 Patents of Distinction for this vehicle design.
From the start the RZR was envisioned to have an dramatically diverse audience
and opened the door to unthinkable future potential for the Side x Side market.
- My design challenge was to create a vehicle that provided fun as well as
function and it proved to be a great success.

An early concept sketch for the RZR back in 2004 conveying an aggressive, open cockpit, off-road vehicle with a different take on the underhood storage.

During the course of any project a sense of realism must take a firm grasp of your concept. This is an quick take on how parts could work together in the assemly.
A surge in the demand from desert and dune consumers dialed in the RZR family with an additional model, the 2009 RZR S.
- A wider track and more aggressive suspension package called for me to design fender flares and rear support bars to the already popular existing design. I worked closely with engineering and CAID guys to knock this one quickly.
Consumer need for bringing even more passengers paved the way for yet another model in the RZR line-up,
the 2010 RZR 4.
- I colaborated with another designer on the body and cab frame extension and worked to establish ergonomic standards for rear seating with this occupant package.

Almost every design needs to be refreshed or redesigned; here is a concept sketch I created for a future RZR during a restyle phase.
To bring an entry level consumer into recreational side x sides I redesigned the rear end of the RZR to accomodate a 570cc engine and address the need to be even more functional with the cargo box size and tie-down options.
- An extremely fast paced project project that I sketched, modeled in clay, and managed until production.
With competitive vehicles after a share of the success Polaris has hadin the market, a complete redesign was on the docket to stay ahead. It was decided to start at the top volume model (desert/dune customer) and completly change the game with the 2013 RZR XP1000.
- I managed timing, budgets, and production intent, as well as influenced the design with an Intermediate Industrial Designer on this project.
