"What do we really breathe?"

"What do we really breathe?"

This project aims to highlight the decline in air quality in Hyderabad in the form of a young girl's diary entry. It takes into account newspaper articles spanning over a decade and helps in understanding various environmental problems, research and government policies implemented with each passing year.

The project is a part of Human Factors and Socio-technical Systems Studio where Prof. Vivek Kant has collected various projects on India's Disasters over the Decades. To view project click here.
This project is also to be featured on Asthma Files, a collaborative effort of 6+ countries.

Story Board:
After reading over 150 newspaper articles, I narrowed down the top ten issues that have arisen in Hyderabad during the last decade.

These articles were then used to create a narrative of a little girl. Each day she observes changes in the environment and after research records her findings in her journal. Every page of the journal is based on a new day and a new problem.
Final Illustrations:
Each illustration is based on a separate issue that has resulted in an increase in pollution in Hyderabad.

I decided to keep the images a little scribbled to reflect a schoolgirl's diary entry. Only black and white is used to depict the use of a pencil. Orange and brown is used to add contrast to the project. They are designed to showcase the congested streets and highly populated city of Hyderabad.

Final Journal:
The final journal consists of text, illustrations and graphically represented data.
