Ophthalmosaurus significa en griego “lagarto ojo”, es un género de ictiosaurio que vivió en el período Jurásico medio, hace aproximadamente 165-144 millones de años. Medía hasta 6 metros de longitud. Tenía las aletas delanteras redondeadas y muy desarrolladas para nadar con mayor facilidad. Lo más destacado de este ictiosaurio es el tamaño de sus ojos, que medían un poco más de 10 cm de diámetro, ocupaban casi todo el espacio del cráneo y estaban protegidos por placas óseas. El tamaño de los ojos y los anillos escleróticos sugerían que el Ophthalmosaurus cazaba en las profundidades.

Ophthalmosaurus means in Greek "eye lizard", it is a genus of ichthyosaur that lived in the middle Jurassic period, approximately 165-144 million years ago. It measured up to 6 meters in length. It had rounded and highly developed front fins to swim more easily. The highlight of this ichthyosaur is the size of its eyes, which reached about over 10 cm in diameter, they occupied almost the entire space of the skull and were protected by bony plates. The size of the eyes and the sclerotic rings suggested that the Ophthalmosaurus hunted in the depth.
