Year 3: Computer Arts Practice - Semester 1

Brief:

For this semester we had to follow one of the given briefs for the module. I chose the brief to design three characters; a hero, sidekick and villain in the style of Bob Rafei with DOTA2 design elements attached.

Similar to above: You have been outsourced by a AAA development studio to aid the visual development of new I.P: A 3rd person action game in early pre-production for the new generation of consoles. They are looking for character designs that are reminiscent of Bob Rafei’s work on the Jak n Daxter series crossed with the unique and twisted character art of Valves ‘DOTA2’.

You are to conceive of 2 completed character designs complete with model sheets and accessory break downs.

1 – Protagonist and side kick (should be early to mid-teens and atypical emit heroic qualities). He or she should also have an fantasy creature companion or your own invention but they must complement each other.

2 – Antagonist: An older and unknown creature that emanates all the typical villainous qualities.

Hero:

For the hero I decided to look at the style that Jak was drawn in and reference any quirks in his character design and style. For the characters main design I looked a lot at 'Snowdrop' from DOTA2 for the main design inspiration. Some of the colours where also colour picked from her, mainly the blues.

Sidekick:

For the sidekick I started by googling different video game sidekicks and took a lot of design inspiration from Daxter. I noticed that a lot of the sidekick designs in games of this genre and style were animals so I then looked at different artic animals to compliment the design of the hero and i decided to base my sidekick on an Arctic Fox.

Villain:

At the start my villain was going to be male but I decided to change him to a female for the brief. My main inspirations were from many disney villains such as Cruela, Yzma and Maleficent. I then looked at some DOTA2 female desgins and drew various drag queen esq designs of my villain.
