Risk: A Thesis Exhibition

Upon completing my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Graphic Design at Indiana University, I participated in a gallery exhibition showcasing a semester-long project that I titled, "Risk."  I designed a poster series, a book titled "Field Guide for the Risk Taker," and about 200 small take away cards.  The purpose of this exhibition was to inspire participants to incorporate small, sometimes goofy, risks into their daily lives in an attempt to make them more creative, more empathetic, and expand their comfort threshold.
I produced small cards that participants were encouraged to take with them with suggestions for small risks that they could incorporate into their everyday lives. I wrote approximately 70 different suggested risks and arranged the cards in a random pile for people to pick out.  Some suggested risks included: "Tell your role model how they have affected you." "Find your favorite book in a library and leave five dollars in it. Reward the next person who reads it for having good taste." "Ask the oldest person that you know what their fondest memory is."
I designed, wrote, and assembled each edition of the "Field Guide For the Risk Taker."  I chose to assemble the book with an alteration of a symmetric gate fold, making it open from the center and have two spines on both of its sides.  This method of construction allowed me to design a book that allowed for multiple paths of navigation.  Readers could flip through the book from front to back, or one side from front to back while they flipped the other side from back to front, or even thumb though each page in a random order.  Each side matched with any other spread on the adjacent side. This encouraged readers to not only read about risks but also take one by reading the book in a non-traditional manner.
