The Different Roles Within Construction

Whenever a construction project is underway, there are dozens of construction workers and one or two supervisors onsite. However, there are dozens of other professionals working behind the scenes.

There are different roles in construction that are all needed to complete a project. Each position requires different skills and levels of experience. Continue reading to see a few of those different roles and what tasks they’re responsible for in construction.

Managers

At the top of every construction company are the managers. They supervise individuals and groups of construction workers, including managing their daily work assignments, setting schedules, paying salaries, etc. They work closely with other high-level professionals like accountants, project managers, and safety inspectors. Managers are responsible for training their employees and hiring the right professionals for the job.

Superintendents

Superintendents supervise the daily activities on construction sites and work directly with the workers. They monitor every worker’s schedule, provide onsite training and ensure that the project’s timelines are being met. At different parts of the workday, they approve the tasks that the employees and subcontractors complete.

Engineers

Civil, safety, and structural engineers work in construction to plan, build and maintain different forms of infrastructure. They work to develop the significant components of every city, from bridges to roads. Structural engineers develop strong, durable foundations, walls, ceilings, and other structural components. Civil engineers plan, design, and create all forms of infrastructure, from roads to dams.

Chief Officers

A chief construction officer works in construction management to oversee various construction projects. The work includes planning, developing, and managing every task and activity of public and private construction projects.

A chief operating officer plans, develops, and oversees a business’s operations. The duties include creating the company’s policies and promoting a culture that respects employees and the clients that they work for.

The Full Range of Employment Options

Construction will always be an in-demand industry, but it has one of the slowest job prospects. Employees need to start by realizing that there are many different roles in a construction company.
