Great Expectations

I designed three book covers for an exhibit at the Library of Congress. The designs focused on the meaning and message of the book.  The cover should express the author’s belief’s, point of view, and/or agenda behind the story. The three covers have different requirements. One should be type only, the second should be handmade and the third is the designer’s choice. Each design must also use one of the seven creative strategies. The book that I have chosen for this project is Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens. I felt like three of the meanings that the author was trying to show were: things are not always what they seem, crime and punishment, and those that don't learn from the past tend to repeat it.
For my typography cover I used a clock and handcuffs to show the author's intent. I used the creative stategy physical/shape similarity.
For my handmade cover I used a house of cards to show the author's intent of things aren't always what they seem and how precarious Pip's lifestyle was because of the criminal Magwitch. I used the creative strategy of metaphor for this cover because Pip's life was like a house of cards, ready to come falling down at any time. The hand pulling away the queen of hearts represents how most of his hopes were based on marrying Estella.
For the designer's choice cover I focused on the author's intent that those that don't learn from the past tend to repeat it. The creative stategy I used
was combination.
