Making a Home in Wind City

What makes a home? There is an Amis village along the Hsinchu Xianshan coast that is the only one by the sea on the West Coast.

More than 40 years ago, a captain sailed from Taitung in search of better fishing grounds and settled in Hsinchu. Set within the migratory experience of these Amis people, this series invites a children's literature author and a local illustrator to tell the story of a contemporary maritime adventure.

The cover of the picture book is made of corrugated cardboard to simulate the iron houses common in indigenous neighborhoods. A central puncture allows the cover to transform into a 3D roof. A pocket on the back is made of betel nut leaf sheath, a common material for daily objects. It introduces the Amis gathering culture and provides a unique texture for hands-on experience. The diffraction effect of the pages echoes the people's close ties with the ocean.

An extra feature of transparent pages invites the readers to help complete the story, and can be utilized as interdisciplinary learning material.
