On the sets, people always asked me where I learned the lighting. My answer is simple - practice on personal projects. It's time when you can make mistakes and learn, move lights and try new techniques and ideas. There always will be something new. There is no pressure from client/AD/CD. No need to keep super quality work, just create and stay creative! The same with cinematography. Last 5 years I live in California, plenty of sun and great locations, but sometimes i just miss to shoot in studio with different lighting, shapes, cutters, create my lovely moody images with deep shadows.
