Elements of Photography

This photo represents unity because of all the sailboats masts. Using the green sailboat in front as the main focal point, the surrounding sailboats bring the photo together.
This photo represents line, as you can follow the path down to the end of the dock.
In this photo, you can see texture as the main focal point. There is moss growing on the tree, creating a softer texture along with the ridges of bark which creates a harder texture. These two textures come together to unify the tree.
This photo represents movement. Following the curves of the branch shows the movement of the tree and how it has developed.
This photo represents space/perspective because of the difference of size in the two boats. The larger boat seems to be taking up the majority of the photo, giving the sense that it is much larger than it actually is. The smaller boat only takes up a portion, making it smaller than it actually is.
This photo represents pattern. Each brick is evenly spaced and proportional, allowing for the pattern to really show on the wall.
This photo represents shape/form. As the red paint on the wall chips away, the undertone of yellow drywall is revealed in this defining shape.
This photo represents value. Turning the photo black and white allows to truly see the various shades of green and brown that defines the leaves and branches.
This photo represents proportion because of the angle of the camera. The upward angle gives off the impression that the rocks are very tall, whereas they really only about 8 feet high.
This photo represents color because of the variety of fruits, vegetables and neon signs.
This image represents variety because of all the different flowers in one pot.
This photo represents balance. The two globes sitting on top of the pole are equally divided because of the "one way" sign in the middle. This makes it easier to see the balance between the lights.
This photo represents emphasis. The red heart really stands out against the dark brown wall, creating a powerful splash of color.
1. How can understanding the elements and principles of photography add to your work as an artist?
Understanding the elements and principles of photography allows for the photographer to really think about what they are taking a photo of rather than just taking a photo because it looks interesting. You have a more in depth perception of something as simple as lines in one specific image.
2. What did you learn or refine from this assignment?
Something that I learned from this assignment was the need to start looking at the world through the lens of a camera. Quite literally, every person, object and minor detail of life has a story that can be captured and told through the eyes of a photographer.
3. How can this assignment be improved in the future?
In the future, I would probably like to have a small refresher on how to use camera controls to capture these images. ie, aperture, f-stop.
