Pursuing the Lava Flow

Pursuing the Lava Flow
On March 19th of 2021, there was a geological event occurring on the Icelandic Peninsula. The world was introduced to a new erupting volcano named by the locals "Fagradalsfjall". Until this date, there had not been a volcanic eruption on the peninsula in about 800 years. As soon as the news broke about this natural phenomenon, I knew without a doubt I would be returning to Iceland to capture this once-in-a-lifetime event.

What’s unique about this volcano is its access and proximity to viewing. Most volcanoes in the world are located in places out of reach to the public. The Icelandic volcano is less than an hour's drive from Reykjavik, and a 2-hour hike from the parking area. However, with each passing day, the landscape continues to change, and the ability to get close to the volcano diminishes. The surrounding areas are filling up with molten lava creating vast lava fields and becoming a barrier to the mountain. I was lucky to arrive at the site just in time. See, I had a very small window of time to get to my vantage point to photograph the volcano, 24-hours to be exact. This is because of the approaching storm and rainy weather that was forecasted for the rest of my stay. Less than a week later the hiking trail leading to the closest view of the volcano had become covered by the lava flow and now could only be reached by helicopter. They say "timing is everything".

My climb to almost 4,000 feet to reach the summit was no easy task. The winds were blowing at a constant 50 mph and gusting to a stronger 65 mph. The hike along the rugged terrain of Iceland’s newest erupting volcano was nothing less than challenging, but I made it to my destination with all of my equipment. As the whipping winds and dust blasted my face and camera gear I clicked away as fast as I could to capture this majestic sight in 30-minutes. The conditions made it a pain to stay longer. Nothing wonderful comes with ease, it's the struggle and overcoming of the obstacles that make the journey worth the taking.

I will never forget this amazing hike and my encounters with nature.

Cheers!
