Ideation and planning of the credits for an hypothetical Netflix documentary.
The Angry Man of Jazz is a 40 minutes documentary telling the story of Charles Mingus: genius jazzman, composer and musician, but also a short-tempered, loony philanderer.
Concept
The idea is to replicate Hitchcock’s style of moviemaking, characterised by the use of reduced colour palettes and geometrical elements; everything reminds of the minimalistic, geometrical style typical of Constructivism (where few geometrical elements and a red, black and white colour palette is often used).
There’s nothing ordinary about Charles Mingus’s private life and career, and that’s why I opted for an illustration style that’s essential and a bit chaotic, showing off symbolic elements of the artist’s life and career: a double bass, some musical notes, a cigar, a high heel shoe, ecc…

Lettering
The font used in the opening credits mirrors the illustrations: geometrical, uneven and sharp. The chosen font is Suburbia
Palette
The colour palette is simple: black, white and red. The black and white is a reference to 1920s movies while the red symbolises passion, anger, vitality.
Visual
The visual is characterised by squared elements, strong colours, interactions between text and graphic elements and the use of a grainy filter to recreate the visual effect of a ‘20s motion picture film (the golden age of jazz).
