LES FLÂNERIES DES POSSIBLES

Student Designer: Mélanie Michel, Léa Courtadon
Project Type: Community Space
Duration:  4 months
Project year: 2021
Location: 77  Bernad-Est, Mile-End, Montréal, Canada
LOCATION

The project takes place at 77 Bernard Street East in the Mile End district, under the Van Horne interchange, south of the Canadian Pacific railway line. With its metal structure, the building symbolizes industrial history and a cultural heritage dear to the neighborhood community.

ESSENCE OF THE PLACE

"A respectful attitude towards traditions does not imply regressive traditionalism, but its recognition as a source of meaning, inspiration and emotional grounding."

Juhani Pallasma

CONCEPT

The concept of this project is driven by an architecture of wandering which defends the idea of " getting lost, the better to find oneself" and which is positioned as a continuum of urban wandering. It is experienced through games of shadow and light, surprises that interrupt monotony, games of contrast and homogeneity, rupture and continuity, norm and chance, games of the strange and the banal. and by the absence of markers in opposition to obvious indications.
The story of these sketches begins with a desire to let oneself be carried away by the pencil by observing the shadows that animate this urban wasteland. Then, these strong lines came to be superimposed on the main intention which is to continue the urban wandering inside the building. They are already starting the rhythm in which the spaces and circulations will be placed which will only become apparent later. We begin to glimpse the project through this sensitive and abstract language. The drawings guessed and anticipated our thoughts.

The exploration of space takes place through a complex and immersive labyrinthine journey to force occupants to move around to see its full scope.
"A great spatial continuum, a space that I perceive as a whole as soon as I enter it but that I can never encompass with my gaze. I must go through it, discover it by walking. I experience it frame by frame, like a spatial sequence. "

Peter Zumthor
The whole space is made up of streets, stairs, dead ends, shortcuts, solids, voids and green spaces through which we can wander, meet, find each other, be amazed. It’s a fun playground to explore.
"I'm here, but I'm already far away, on the corner, something attracts me. A falling light and then I continue my stroll. It’s like a journey of discovery. "

Peter Zumthor
A space that leaves room for walking and exploring. The visitor is in control of his movements. We induce a certain way, but it remains subjective.

FURNITURE
EXTERIOR

"Outside: we approach, we see, we are interested, we stop, we appreciate, we walk around, we discover. We do not stop receiving various concussions, successive. And the game played appears. We walk, we circulate, we keep moving, turning around."
Le Corbusier

The space can be walked along like a city whose full scope you want to discover.
