Wheel of Life

In winter 2013, we asked Art Director André Gidoin to help us film a carousel we were making as part of a promotional launch for our new studio in New York. The launch involved a large number of hand made carousels being sent out to clients, and the film was to feature a larger, full colour version.

The collaboration that followed was more rewarding than we could ever have anticipated. Working closely with André we developed the concept of the larger carousel, evolving it into a hand made, modern day Zoetrope.

A Zoetrope is a device that produces the illusion of motion from a rapid succession of static pictures, often referred to as the Wheel Of Life. We were inspired to tell the story of one zoetrope in particular, that one night came to life.

All filmed in camera, the horses on the carousel are spaced to spin in sync with the camera’s frame rate, creating the illusion of motion. Each one is carefully studied to follow the one before it, so that once animated they appear to be galloping.
