Photorealistic Vector Clock

Photorealistic Vector Clock
The objective for this project was to create a photorealistic timepiece that had mechanical parts. I chose to create a pocket watch. The time limit for this project was two weeks.
Sketches and Inspiration
The inspiration for this project was this vintage womens pocket watch. I loved the thick border and ornate clock hands. I sketched the different pieces of the watch to learn how the different parts worked together, and get an idea of the individual shapes. I also got a better idea of how the clock was layered, so that I could emulate it in my design.
Drafts
In this first draft I established the different pieces and created a base to build the rest of the clock on. I also started working on gradients and shadows, which can be seen on the module and around the inner wheels.
In this draft I worked on establishing the highlights and shadows. I also added in the small clock hand and the texture of the clock face. The critiques I received in this stage were very helpful for establishing the correct shadows and highlights, as well as an improved texture.
Final Version
The final clock is a photorealistic pocket watch made entirely out of vectors. Shadows and highlights were established using blurs, gradients, clipping masks, and textures. After showing it to several people to get feedback, many were surprised that it was not a real clock. It is one of the most difficult projects I have completed, and I am happy with how it came out.
