Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD, is a term used for several lung conditions. Some of the most common lung conditions are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. There are nearly 30 million people in the US suffering from COPD, and about a half of them do not know about it. Emphysema affects the airflow of a person and it destroys the air sacs in the lungs. Chronic bronchitis results in inflammation and narrows the bronchial tubes.

COPD conditions are often mistaken for the common cold, as the symptoms are mild at first. Symptoms associated with COPD conditions are heavy breathing and coughing, and they can lead to respiratory infections. A person can acquire COPD if they have a long history of smoking or have been exposed to chemical fumes. There are surgeries such as the bullectomy that can be performed to increase the quality of life for a patient with COPD, in which the doctor removes bullae from the lungs.
