Sandpipers are a large family, Scolopacidae, of waders, including many species called sandpipers, as well as those called by names such as curlew and snipe. The majority of these species eat small invertebrates picked out of the mud or soil.

The males live up to their name but, confusingly, females are brown. Bright orange-yellow beak and eye-ring make adult male blackbirds one of the most striking garden birds, with a mellow song is also a favourite.
