Safe Space Carpets
SEMESTER 5, WS 21/22
SELF INITIADED PROJECT
INDIVIDUAL WORK

Sitting comfortably at a table with friends and family, eating something or just having a coffee or a glass of wine is a safe place for me. A place where I feel safe to share my thoughts, worries and feelings.
Perception plays a big part in this concept. Colors, shapes, and materials are things that can evoke different perceptions. For example, the circle, which has no clear beginning or end, is often associated with safety.
Its round and supple shape is perceived as feminine and soft. The circle symbolizes the earth and the sun, is a sign of rebirth and conveys security, for example, by meeting »in a circle of friends«. For this reason, the circle is found in all elements.
The centerpiece of the table is the carpet, which evokes a visual and tactile perception. Again, round shapes were used to create a safe connection and a sense of security.
The glass top allows you to touch the rug and have a tactile experience and enter into a certain resonance with the rug. You connect not only with the other people at the table, but also with the table itself. The soft fabric of the rug also conveys a sense of security, safety and refuge.
Carpets take on a special role, they are a global cultural form and bring us together. Together at the same table. Together in a safe place.
