Wellington Zoo - Snow Leopard Fundraising Pin

Wellington Zoo - Snow Leopard Fundraising Pin
ILLUSTRATION, PRINT AND PRODUCT DESIGN : OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2021

At the end of 2022, Wellington Zoo will be receiving two female snow leopards (Asha and Manju) from Melbourne Zoo. Wellington Zoo is redeveloping the unused old sun bear exhibit to be suitable for the new arrivals, which will emulate their natural habitat and provide many opportunities for natural behaviours and physical exercise.

Wellington Zoo is a not-for-profit organisation and relies on public support and donations to help them build new exhibits, fund research efforts and ensure their animals receive the best of care. The zoo is currently fundraising for the snow leopard exhibit
with tote bags, soft toys and community events.

I was asked to design concepts for a wooden pin/badge that could be sold as a fundraising item by the zoo. I developed dozens of sketches and presented them to the marketing team, who selected their preferred design. This was refined and enhanced towards the end of 2021, including the design of a matching backing card. The pins went on sale 16 March 2022.

As a lifelong fan and frequent visitor at Wellington Zoo, working on this project was a dream come true and I am excited to see Asha and Manju settle in to their new habitat.

Some of the initial rough sketches and ideas.

The first round of sketches and concepts presented to the zoo. The two leopards forming a heart shape was quickly selected as the preferred design.

Refinement and pose experiments for the snow leopard heart concept. The goal was to find a way to capture playfulness and love between the sisters.

A close-to-finished sketch of the chosen pose for the pin.

Once this was approved, I refined the sketch and drew several cleaned-up versions before we landed on the final design.

The finished pin, laser-engraved on to recycled New Zealand beech wood veneer.

The backing cards were designed using elements created for the snow leopard soft toy cards to create a unified design across all touchpoints.
