2019 IXDD: instagram Voter Registration API

UX Hackathon Brief 2019
What

How might we increase voter turnout among first-time voters
When ideating on potential solutions, consider age, race, gender, and socio-economic status. In addition, think about how levels of access, election type, and voting laws can play a part in lowering voter turnout.

Types of first time voters
New citizens
New state residents
People eligible to vote for the first time
Haven't voted before but are eligible
Age
Gen Z (under 21)
Millenial (22-37)
Gen X (38-53)
Boomer (54+)
Access
City vs rural
Can't take time off work etc.
Election type
Low turnout is most pronounced in primary elections, off-year elections for state legislators, and local elections.
Background & Research

What affects voter turnout rates?

Why?

Ensure there are more voices and more perspectives heard.
How?

Working with a team of 3 - 5 you'll brainstorm and come up with a solution using whiteboards, and/or miro, whimsical or pictures of whiteboards, you’ll be provided. You'll have about 90 minutes to work through solutions.

Some areas to start your explorations:
How do new voters find about voting in the first place? (how and when to vote)
How do new voters find out about requirements and where their polling place is.
How do new voters register to vote?
The actual process of voting.

Lo-fi sketches and a hypothesis for how you'd do this.
Start them with basic statistics for voting. Teams can do their own research as well during the competition.
Example of what the handoff might be:

Requirements

How to present your solution to the audience.
Pick one team member to present.
Optional: One person drives the presentation or clicks through the wires.
Deliverable: One person presents on a zoom link to the audience. Show whatever helps illustrate your concept. Sketches/wireframes/slides, paper-prototype, etc.
At the end of the session you'll have about 15 minutes to do a dry run with your team before presenting to the audience.
Pencil's down at 7:45/8.
The team's get 10 minutes total to present.
Once all teams have presented the judges will adjourn and the audiences votes will be tallied.
Winners will be announced and prizes will be provided to the winning team.

Best of luck to everyone and please send any questions to phoenix@ixda.org
