O B J E T S P E R D U
My artistic practice is a form of digital photomontage, tending to concentrate on exploring overlooked details. My work stretches back and makes references to some of the experimental techniques of Man Ray (such as solarisation, negative images and multiple exposures) and the philosophical underpinnings of the Dadaists and Surrealists, focusing around the forms and configurations that can be created out of images of decomposition, corrosion and decay.
The images generated digitally highlight the destabilising force of objets trouvé. Taking images of decomposition, corrosion and decay unearthed in abandoned and darkened corners of the Yorkshire countryside I undertake processes of digital experimentation to give new life – to create unique new works of art. In fact the objets, through the digital process, are often transformed to the extent that they cannot be recognised – turning Duchamp’s notion of ready-mades and objets trouvé inside out becoming objets perdus.
Presented as such, they now are brought to light under gallery conditions and before the viewer in a comfortable and well lit setting – however, the digitally captured and manipulated images from, and of, decay that are metamorphosed into objets perdu provoke a philosophical reaction in the viewer. They are often dark, and have been described as disturbing. They depict, however, what is known by all people who live in the depths of the countryside and on a nodding everyday acquaintance with Nature, that in the midst of life, we are indeed in death.
