Utopia could look different to everyone, but for me, a true Utopia is simply a place of peace.
This project is dedicated to the unseen "Societies of Peace" – matriarchies worldwide that deserve more recognition for their values and traditions. While it is impossible to create a perfect Utopian society, I see matriarchies as imperfectly perfect societal models that can give inspiration to modern peaceful modes of living.
The project display has 2 parts:
1) 4 screen-printed flags - to symbolically represent the 4 defining qualities of a matriarchy: sacred culture, gift economy, egalitarian community and horizontal relational network
2) 3 digitally printed handmade booklets - to provide simple information about the 3 surviving matriarchies in Asia: the Minangkabau (Indonesia), the Mosuo (China), and the Khasi (India)
