Motion Graphic in Film - Opening Sequence Analysis
Baby Driver 2017
We are assigned to pick any film, research on either opening or closing sequence of the film and analyze the title sequence based on the narrative of the title sequence, the elements and background music used, the transitions and effects and so on.
Baby Driver is a 2017 action film written and directed by Edgar Wright.
The movie is about a talented, young getaway driver - relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dream, he seems a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being force into working for a crime boss, he must face the music when a heist doomed his life, love and freedom.
The opening sequence begins with the up-angle shot of a building but there is a hint of a double yellow straight line between the movie title that resemble a road or a highway.
After the movie title ,the camera pan down at the lobby door and the main actor slide through the door while the camera focusing only the main actor for about 3 minute of the sequence using only Steadicam shot.
The first half of the sequence shows how happy the main actor is by watching his movement and his surrounding when he is not being bothered and just keep listening to his music. While looking at the surrounding it shows that the environment is a little bit sketchy and is not really that safe.
Since the main actor love listening to music, there isn't a single frame goes by without words from the song being written in graffiti and every sound effect such as car horns, motorcycle revs ,bicycle ringing ,people typing the phone and people drumming are perfectly timed to the song.
Half way of the sequence the 2nd main actor pops out and making eye contact with the main actor. It introduces the main love interest towards each other.
After the main actor picks up the coffees the mood changes quickly for example there's a police officer walking straight towards the actor and started acting scared by looking back at the police officer. Next there is a person wearing a warning sign towards sins and lastly the main actor almost get hit by the cyclist and police vehicle patrolling the area.
It all shows that the main actor is a criminal and who works with bad people and it is clear that the main actor is not comfortable with any of it and wants to be free.
The main actor returns to the lobby after the sequence ended, indicating that he is working on a heist and being directed to get coffees for the group.
