Before the Microsoft Store, there was the Retail Experience Center (REC).
In 2009, Microsoft piloted a new retail experience concept on the Redmond campus. Using Surface tables to facilitate in-store shopping, customers could browse through various hardware types, research product specifications, and create customized comparison sheets. Some of the key screens -- depicting category navigation, product selection and product details -- are shown below.
