On October 2020, I tried the #Inktober challenge in which you make a new illustration each day according to the daily prompt. The first prompt was 'Fish', so I kept drawing fish for some time. I had a vision of animating a turning fish.
At first I tried a fake 3D one, which was a huge challenge. Then moved to a 3D fish model that I have rotoscoped to a frame by frame animation
One of my first sketches on the left vs. the final render on the right
The final render includes compositing and VFX in Adobe After Effects: color corrections and grain mostly.
This version is a frame by frame animation I did using Adobe Photoshop, and I used the 3D fish I animated earlier as a reference.
I wanted this version to have a retro cell animation look, so I used After Effects to create the chromatic aberration effect (offsetting the RGB channels) as well as the grainy old TV texture on the background, and some layer styles to give them volume.
This sketch was made on Procreate, using an iPad pro and an apple pencil.
I used some brushes to give it the printmaking style.
This is a single frame out of 73 frames I have rendered out from Cinema 4D.
It is still missing the visual effects and color correction I have added later on, on the compositing stage, using Adobe After Effects.
And here are some funny illustrations I did
I wanted to draw a very long fish that swim in circles, chasing his tail, like a dog :)
I should try and animate these long ones...
This fish is an "happy accident" that happened when is accidentally switched off the fill color for the body.
