Redesign Vellinge Municipality
School project - redesign the coat of arms
A school project where we would redesign the coat of arms for a municipality in Sweden, I chose Vellinge which is a municipality located in southern Sweden. Vellinge is a municipality with beaches, nature reserves and other tourists attractions which I wanted to reflect in the coat of arms. I feel that the coat of arms used today is very dated and should be redesigned to make the municipality's more updated and modern.
MOODBOARD
In vellinge county are cities such as Falsterbo and Skanör which are known for their beautiful beaches, taverns on the beach and wonderful trails for hiking. Vellinge is located along the coast in southern Skåne, Sweden’s southernmost county. During the summer, Vellinge is a bit like the French Riviera, which I wanted to capture in the new coat of arms.
COAT OF ARMS
For the coat of arms, I wanted to capture the parts that makes the county the Swedish Riviera. The municipality attracts beautiful beaches, blue waters, beautiful nature reserves and other monuments that attract tourists.
TYPOGRAPHY
As the main font, I chose Montserrat because I wanted a san serif that has a light weight typogrpahy and a little lower X-height. Also I wanted it to be elegant and easy to read. I chose Georgia as font for the body text because it is easy to read and goes well with Montserrat. I chose another font, six hands, as I wanted a font with a handwritten feel to complement the simple and elegant Montserrat
COLORS
The main colour of the municipals visual identity is blue so I kept that but made it darker. The other main colours is black and white. For the accent colours I wanted three colours that represented the beach, the sea and the nature reserves. In order not to mix too many colors, I tried to stick to blue tones and chose the turquoise color to represent the nature reserves.
LOGO VARIATION
VISUAL IDENTITY
For the visual identity I created four different letter designs with the symbols from the coat of arms. I wanted them to take up much space but not disturb the readability so I put the symbols in the background with opacity.
MUNICIPAL SIGN
For the municipality sign I chose a close-up picture of the sea washing up on the beach. The picture reflects the municipality's beautiful beaches and the colors are the same as the ones I chose for the identity.
