Why a new graphic project?

John Owen's work on mortification has served as an inspiration over the centuries as a source of support and instruction for other serious theologians who have focused on biblical counseling and greatly helped the church of Christ. The North American edition is very beautiful and served as a reference source for the creation of this proposal that I present below. However, I believe that the Brazilian edition could have an editorial project that reflects the importance of this work.

Porque um novo projeto gráfico?

Obra de John Owen sobre a mortificação é tem servido de inspiração no decorrer dos séculos como fonte de apoio e instrução para outros teólogos sérios que tem se debruçado na área aconselhamento bíblico e ajudado muito a igreja de Cristo. A edição norte-americana é muito bonita e serviu de fonte de referência para a criação dessa proposta que apresento abaixo. Porém acredito que a edição brasileira poderia ter um projeto editorial que refletisse a importância dessa obra.

Something I wanted to do was make the readability better. Although Owen's production of rich material can be difficult to read, his thoroughness coupled with the linguistic distance makes the reading process sometimes cumbersome. As a reader of the book I realized that some things could be improved such as increasing the font size, larger leading, larger margins, breathing areas... These adjustments will consequently increase the number of pages, but I don't see it as a problem. This collection is not intended to be a pocket book.

As much as he wanted to summarize the content of his treatise on sin and the mortification of sin, Owen knew that it was an extensive and sometimes complex subject because it dealt with the human heart.

Algo que eu queria fazer era tornar a leiturabilidade melhor. Owen apesar de produzir um rico material pode ser difícil de ler, sua minuciosidade se junta à distância linguística torna o processo de leitura algumas vezes pesado. Como leitor do livro percebi que algumas coisas poderiam ser melhoradas como aumentar o tamanho da fonte, entrelinha maior, margens maiores, áreas de respiro... Esses ajustes consequentemente irão aumentar a quantidade de páginas, porém não vejo como um problema. Essa coletânea não se propõe a ser um livro de bolso mesmo.

Owen por mais que quisesse resumir o conteúdo do seu tratado sobre pecado e a mortificação do pecado sabia que era um assunto extenso e às vezes complexo por se tratar do coração humano.

But why a pomegranate?

There was never a consensus on which fruit God forbade Adam and Eve to eat, the scriptures themselves omit this information. The pomegranate is an attractive red fruit both on the outside and inside and has a resistant appearance due to its hard skin. It also has a majestic appearance because of the five-petaled corolla giving the impression of a crown over the fruit. Inside there are numerous fleshy seeds with a bittersweet taste and a reddish appearance.

In a simple analogy, the pomegranate is like sin, attractive, resistant and that will reign and rule over the life of the one who eats it. Its seeds symbolize the other sins that accompany it, after all an abyss calls other abyss as the psalmist says. A sin never walks alone and will soon manifest its heavy chains and fetters to enslave the unsuspecting. And the branches that are embedded in the title reflect the invasive and savage nature of sin.

Mas por quê uma romã?

Nunca houve um consenso sobre qual era o fruto que Deus proibiu Adão e Eva de comerem, as próprias escrituras omitem essa informação. A romã é um fruto vermelho atrativo tanto por fora quanto por dentro e aspecto resistente por causa de sua casca dura. Ela também possui uma aparência majestosa por causa de corola de cinco pétalas dando a impressão de uma coroa sobre o fruto. Por dentro há inúmeras sementes carnosas de sabor agridoce e aparência avermelhada.

Em uma analogia simples a romã é como o pecado, atrativo, resistente e que irá reinar e governar sobre a vida daquele que o come. Suas sementes simbolizam os outros pecados que o acompanham, afinal um abismo chama outros abismo como diz o salmista. Um pecado nunca anda sozinho e logo manifestará suas pesadas correntes e grilhões para escravizar os desavisados. E os ramos que se entranham no título reflete a natureza invasiva e selvagem do pecado.
