Osaka Dreaming’ is a personal photographic journey taking place over several years in my adopted 2nd home Osaka, Japan. Having held an idealistic picture of Japan as a gritty futuristic world trapped in a 1980s time warp, ‘Osaka Dreaming’ looks to indulge in my idealistic dream-like vision of Japan and bring it to life before modernisation changes it.
To create ‘Osaka Dreaming’ I would select a destination and set off by push bike or by train with a 40yr old manual 85mm Russian lens, some headphones on, and let my curiosity take centre stage. I would wander like this for hours or whole days and often not land where I intended to. This lonely wandering with an old battered lens defined my journey, framed and limited by perspective and helped me experience Japan a different way, and I hope these images share that same experience."
The whole project was exhibited in Perth, Western Australia in 2019
