The Importance of Reading | Dr. Edward Thalheimer

Reading is a beautiful experience at any age, allowing us to be transported into an entirely different world. We can learn about the lives of characters and even become them ourselves. It will enable us to learn more about the world around us, and become more culturally aware, as well. Below are some ways that reading can have a positive effect on a child’s development.

Developing empathy
When we read, we put ourselves into the story, feeling the feelings and emotions of the character in front of us. Doing this as a child helps develop empathy as they read the book because as the book goes on, they can pick out little things the characters do or say that they can really relate to in their lives. This helps them conceptualize and empathize with the world around them and gain a deeper understanding of their own emotions.
