Drawing Expressions on Characters
For this task, we were given an expressions sheet for the reference image and tasked with drawing the expressions on a character. The purpose of this task was to help learn to draw a consistent character through different expressions and to illustrate those expressions clearly.
Reference Expressions Sheet :
Sketching the character: For the character, I decided to go with a female character since the reference image also featured a female. So I first sketched a turn-around of the head and a full-body pose of the character by referring to the image above.
Drawing the expressions: Since I have completed the turn-around of the head, now I have a basic idea of what my character was gonna look like. So I chose a few expressions that I was gonna be comfortable with drawing and started applying some expressions to my character.
Digitalizing the character: I took the full-body pose that I first sketched and started the digitalization process. Here, I corrected the proportions of the character by flipping my canvas many times until I was satisfied. While flipping the canvas I was able to see many weird angles and disproportionate areas. I've also added more details to the eyes, and shoes and changed the structure of the legs since it felt a bit odd and didn't suit the upper body pose that much. I also changed the shoes and added a bit more detail to them during the finalization.
Coloring the character: Now for the fun part - coloring!
COMPLEXITIES: During the digitalization process I was surprised to see so many disproportionate areas and weird angled areas in the character. Continuously flipping the canvas and slowly correcting it took a lot of time.
LEARNING OUTCOME: While doing this task I was able to learn how to keep the character constant as I was applying expressions and how different expressions applied to a character changes the moods of the character to the viewer's eye. I enjoyed the whole process.
