The Davies Award in Public Health

With over 30 years of experience as a neurologist, James C. Johnston, MD, JD focuses on global neurology services to improve patient care, train physicians, and advance medical research in underserved and developing regions.

In 2019, Dr. James C. Johnston was honored with the Inaugural Davies Award in Public Health (Davies Award) from the World Association for Medical Law in conjunction with Tel Aviv University and the Israeli Ministry of Health. This award recognizes his long-standing efforts to implement widespread public health guidelines, especially in places where guidelines and services did not previously exist. It also celebrates efforts to improve the quality of physician training, with an overall goal of improving healthcare for underserved populations.

An Honorary Professor of Neurology at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, Dr. Johnston established the non-profit organization Global NeuroCare® to advance medical services in the most impoverished regions, particularly sub-Saharan Africa. Global NeuroCare® is accredited by the World Health Organization, and holds Special Consultative Status with the United Nations ECOSOC. James C. Johnston, MD, JD and his colleague Ethiopian neurologist Mehila Zebenigus, MD, both Directors of Global NeuroCare®, serve as Civil Society Delegates on behalf of this NGO, and provide expert analysis on global health issues, helping implement and monitor UN goals and objectives.

Drs. Zebenigus and Johnston have presented their recommendations at conferences in Addis Ababa, Baku, Los Angeles, Tel Aviv, and Tokyo over the last few years, and provided expert policy statements at various UN events in Geneva, New York, and Vienna.

Dr. Johnston dedicated the Davies Award to the Department of Neurology at Addis Ababa University, and donated the awarded funds to Global NeuroCare®.
