6 Square - Dreamy Aerial Typography

6 Square - Dreamy Aerial 3D Typography -
This is another 3D typography project after the Kidag Font 3D and the Modular Font ones.
For this project, I reached out to Sergei Llambrich to work with his own Experimental Modular Font which I thought would lend itself well to 3D work.

Below, you will find the 36 renderings, the full latin alphabet 26 glyphs (A-Z) and the 10 arabic numerals (0-9). First the thumbnails, then each rendering in full size.

Follows a quick description of the creation process and tools used and credits for the cloud imagery used.
Process
All the images above are produced using a similar process.

1. Glyph Selection. First, I selected the variation of the particular glyph between the ones available in Sergei's font. For example, see the choices for 'A'.

2. Extrusion & Shaping. The next step consists in extruding the 2D type into a 3D shape, often being playful in the process. See below as an example. This is done in Cinema 4D.
3. Sky selection. The cloud backgrounds are either from unsplash.com or my own cloud pictures for a few. For personal projects like this, unsplash provides a great resource for stock photography and textures.
4. Cloud Filtering. In this stage, I used Photoshop to texture the clouds. See the details below from the original cloud picture to the texture I used in the next steps.
5. Composition. Back to Cinema 4D to build up the scene, position the camera and additional elements like the balloons. Positioning lights is tricky as it was important to find light positions and directions that created a lighting in harmony with the background cloud texture.

6. Final Compositing. The final stage was to adjust the image's contrast, lighting and tint in photoshop. I also did some texturing and compositing for things that are easier done in Photoshop. For example, in most of the renderings, when clouds appear to come in front of the 3D geometry, that effect is created in Photoshop through simple layer masking and mask painting.

Credits
Most of the renderings come from unsplash.com. Many thanks to the people listed below for sharing their work on that platform!

Why 6 Square?
You guessed: 26 letters, 10 digits = 36 = 6 Square :-)
