Existential Guilt

“Existential Guilt”, is a frame-by-frame animation that is influenced by the news and other controversial topics we face today. The year 2021 has been tough for most, whether it was pandemic-related, natural disasters or crime news. The work starts out as hopeful and soon becomes finessed into domination of power, leaving only a sense of chaos and the possibility of a new reality with uneasiness. The interest and inspiration from the media, and the influence of current news has become a part of this animation. The double meaning of the fishbowl allows us to perceive the viewer from behind the glass ‘screen’ and the apparent distractions from the media, reflecting on the saying “the attention span of a goldfish”. Ultimately, the rising water presents itself the illusion of the overwhelming remorse the viewer is breathlessly experiencing.
