Zero Waste Garments

My final design for this project ultimately is the product of escapism. I saw this again and again in both the original Celtic garments I was drawing from, and the modern runways inspired by these same designs from designers such as Alexander McQueen. Escapism is also a deep feeling which resonates with me personally. Across the designs I was seeing, there was a continuous motif which intrigued me most, wrapping. To me, wrapping perfectly encapsulates the feeling of escapism and incorporates other feelings such as drowsiness, infatuation, warmth, fondness, and many more emotions which I also associate with Celtic design. My father has always shared with me the stories of my Scottish heritage and our family clan. He was always overjoyed to tell me humorous facts about our shared lineage which led to a series of inside family jokes. I wanted to include my memories of those jokes into my work here since these are my experiences surrounding my heritage. My father’s jokes built this sense of humor into the nudity of Celtic fashion for me, so I left much of the body exposed. Being that the original textile used in these garments was wool, I thought then that it might work to pretend as though moths had eaten through a cherished garment creating these many large holes within the garments. Even though the garment is near completely destroyed, the wearer remains dearly attached to what remains of the garment, hiding in the many layers of fabric which remain.
