The Classic of Tea or Tea Classic is the first known monograph on tea in the world, by Chinese writer Lu Yu between 760 CE and 762 CE, during the Tang dynasty.
My hometown, Huzhou, is where Lu Yu used to live and write down Tea Classic. It's a quiet and beautiful town located in the Yangtze River Delta with countless mountains covered with bamboos and tea plants. Little egrets hover over lake Taihu and rivers elegantly just like snow-white fairies.
People in Huzhou live a slow life, they taste tea while using bamboo and animal hair to make Hubi, a high-grade calligraphy brush. Famous ancient writers, scholars and calligraphers of various dynasties take Hubi as treasure.
In this personal project, I tried to capture and personify the temperament of my hometown in different styles. Combining the four main elements of tea, bamboo, egret, and Chinese calligraphy, then adding a little sense of street fashion, one by one, I drew unruly yet gentle characters.
