We were called upon to design a Odaiko drum stand for Booming Tree Taiko, a modern, local Taiko duo. There were a few requirements that we were to fulfill; the stand had to symbolize their Taiko drumming practice, fit into the back of an SUV when collapsed, and be able to incorporate different banners and light features in its structure.
We began by looking at their previous performances. Taiko by nature, is a very dynamic, engaging art form with deep meaning in its performance, and we wanted to reflect that in our final design.
Based on our research and interviews with our client, we formulated a poetic statement which would guide our overall design.
We also produced list of requirements to be incorporated in our final design.
Many different options were considered throughout our design process before arriving on our final concept.
Made of poplar wood and canvas, with a maple centrepiece, our final design incorporates a space for lighting features between the wings of the structure. As well, it can be set up and taken down by a single person, as there are no adhesives or permanant fasteners used in its construction. In addition, the fabric coverings are also interchangeable, and can be adapted to each performance.
As the main feature in Booming Tree Taiko's performances, we also produced a new visual identity which embodied our concept and would be easily identifiable by others.
