THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF Taiwanese Cultural Association

百年之後，從一開始—臺灣文化協會100年，進擊的啟蒙時代

整整一百年前，臺灣文化協會，一群急切吸收現代文明的知識人，為社會發起一場史無前例的「啟蒙」。

啟蒙？啟迪蒙昧？光只有「知識人」的單方熱情當然不夠──他們要追求「大眾」了解、接納並且還要攜手走向進步的社會──彷如情書。知識分子展開熱情行動，約莫是日本殖民統治進入穩定之時。走在思想前端的臺灣人，不再武裝抗日，而是以文化頭腦爭取臺灣人的自主位置。

1921年文化協會成立，正是百年文化運動的起點。知識分子使盡方法，向大眾傳遞一封一封「啟蒙」的情書。他們是作家、畫家、音樂家、劇場人、舞蹈家，無不充滿熱忱，踏出百年之旅的第一步，想要擁抱群眾。

1921年到2021年，日本殖民、白恐解嚴，到當代眼前。一百年後的此時，本次展覽由6封情書構成3個展區：「在啟蒙的浪頭上我等你」、「我們之間竟如此近」、「起身一起回望光源的影」，分別說明1920-1930、1930-1940年代的知識分子與大眾纏綿關係，以及100年後逐漸沈澱遺忘的文協足跡。

最後，現場將留下第7封情書，請你來投入當代的感情、摸索永恆的價值。

我們在文協100年之際，不讓歷史歸零，而是從1開始。

The Abiding Light of a Century-old Beacon: TCA’s Pivotal Role in Taiwan’s Modern Enlightenment

It was one century ago this year that a motivated group of modernist intellectuals sparked an unprecedented ‘enlightenment’ movement in Taiwan under the banner of their new and progressive organization – the Taiwanese Cultural Association (TCA).

Knowing full well that any enlightened flame, like an impassioned love letter, perishes if not acknowledged and embraced, these intellectuals worked to weave their ideas into the broader public consciousness. Taiwan was well into its second decade under Japanese colonial rule. Unlike their predecessors, who had taken up arms to oppose Japan’s annexation and cultural sublimation of their island, Taiwan’s newest generation of educated, progressive thinkers sought to establish a sovereign Taiwanese identity within the colonial status quo.

The founding of TCA in 1921 marked the ‘opening shot’ in a century-long, still-ongoing movement. Under its umbrella, impassioned thought leaders, including contemporary authors, painters, musicians, actors, and dancers, sent a continuous stream of enlightened ‘love letters’ out into the world. It was they who took the first, bold steps forward to embrace Taiwanese society.

This exhibition celebrates a century of TCA-inspired progressive literature and thought - from Japanese colonial rule through Nationalist Chinese martial law repression to the present. Six literary ‘love letters’ are spotlighted in the exhibition’s three main sections. The first, Enlightenment’s Outstretched Hand, focuses on the 1920s - 1930s; the second, The Surprising Closeness of Us, describes the 1930s - 1940s; and the third, Revisiting a Shared Heritage, examines the largely forgotten legacy of TCA one century on.

The seventh ‘love letter’ at the end of the exhibition is open for you to leave your thoughts on this vibrant facet of Taiwanese history and to ponder life’s eternal values.

On the 100th anniversary of the Taiwanese Cultural Association, we celebrate not only its legacy but also its continuing role in leading Taiwanese cultural and social enlightenment forward into the future.

透過「深偽技術」與現代演員的配音，我們藉由人物的口白在相距100年後，感受到文協人的浪漫情意。

The films introduce six prominent Association figures during the 1920s to the 1930s. These include Loa Ho, Lu Bing-ding, Li Xian-zhang, Tan Ting-pho, Lin Hau, and Yang Kui. Through “deepfake” technology and voice dubbing by modern actors, these figures provide their unique perspectives on the core spirit of the exhibition, helping visitors better appreciate the romantic spirit held by the members of Taiwanese Cultural Association from 100 years ago.

展場中有說書人寫給大衆的六封情書，散布在各區域，邀你進入展場，拿取信封，將情書放入，作為你我之間的紀念。

In the exhibition area, there are six love letters written by a storyteller to the public. The letters are spread out across different areas of the venue. We invite you to take an envelope and put the love letter inside as a memento.
