MOVING DAY - An animation for my 3D Animation class at the Art Institute of Virginia Beach. The Claw 3D model was provided by the school, but everything else (animation, texturing, and modeling of the safe and stool) was my creation. The purpose of the exercise was to show a claw moving a heavy and a light object without using the claw grip to move it (as that will be covered in a future class).
SHARK TAILS - An animation I did for 3D Animation class at the Art Institute of Virginia Beach. The Ultimate Tail rig was provided by Ugur Ulvi Yetiskin and the Shark rig by BFX on Creative Crash.
THERE BE SPIDERS - This is an animation I did for 3D animation classes at the Art Institute. We were asked to do a character animation about someone being scared or surprised. So I thought about spiders and who better to get startled by a spider than Spiderman. The Spiderman rig is fan art by Gary Wee on Creative Crash and the spider rig is from Wasim Khan on Creature Rigs.
Stop Motion Animation
3D Environment & Textures
JAPANESE INTERIOR - This is an interior I modeled with basic shaders and lighting for my 3D Modeling class.  It was done in the style of the Edo Period (1616-1860 AD) by researching the period.  I also added a bit of my own stylings with the Torii house symbol and bonsai trees, which were drawn on iPad with Adobe Ideas and then taken as vector to Illustrator and Maya as curves to be lofted and extruded as geometric art forms.
UTOPIAN LEMURIA - This is an environment modeled, textured and animated for Materials & Lighting class at the Art Institute of Virginia Beach.  It is my version of the lost utopia of Lemuria.  I did all the 3D modeling, texturing, and lighting.  Maya Vegetation was provided by AutoDesk and XFROG.
STEAM TRAIN - This was a project in "Materials & Lighting" class at The Art Institute of Virginia Beach.  The school provided me with an OBJ model of a Wedgwood train and I designed the Steam Train with my own modeling modifications, textures, lighting, steam particle effects, and creation of the train station environment.
GOSHAWK FLYOVER - Here is a BAE Goshawk Mk127 plane texturing and animation I did for "Materials and Lighting" class.  I did the textures, lighting, and environment, which included modeling my former ship, the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71).  The airplane model was provided by the Art Institute of Virginia Beach.
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN - I modeled my version of the World Trade Center Port Authority Transportation Hub (WTC PATH), which was designed by Santiago Calatrava and is currently under construction in New York City.  The modeling was done with Autodesk Maya for an architectural design assignment in my 3D Modeling class at the Art Institute of Virgina Beach.

3D Character Design
Samurai - This is a character I designed, modeled, rigged, UV mapped, textured, and animated for the Character Modeling & Rigging class.
Yumiko - A female character I designed, Yumiko is an archery bow child who was separated from her family and learned to live from the land by learning the ways of flora and fauna. Software used: AutoDesk Maya, Adobe PhotoShop, and GarageBand for iPad.
LUNATEK CREATURE DESIGN - I designed this Aztec creaure who hunts by the light of the moon using a process called lunar synthesis.  I modeled and animated him using AutoDesk Maya and Adobe Photoshop.  Some of the texture were provided by CG Textures.
GOREGLAY - A Tim Burton style gargoyle I modeled and textured with Maya and Photoshop.  Also shown below are the clay model and original concept drawing I did for this character which I created from scratch. A full presentation on Gorgelay is on Prezi at: http://prezi.com/4tj5gzrd_ppe/gorgelay/
CONCEPT ART - This is my original concept drawing of this Tim Burton style gargoyle I call Gorgelay, which I named as an anagram of gargoyle.

GARGOYLE LOGO DESIGN - I designed this gargoyle logo to use with the Gorgelay 3D model.

TINKER CLAY MODEL - This was my first time modeling with clay and first time using Acrylic paints.  I used Super Sculpey for the modeling, which I later developed into a full story about the Tinker and the Steampunkables.

CLAY TINKER - Here is the clay modeling of the Tinker character steampunk dog which I designed.

STEAMPUNK TINKER - This is the initial drawings for a steampunk dog "Tinker" character I designed, which later grew into the Steampunkables story-based hunt sim in the virtual world of Second Life: http://steampunkables.wordpress.com

AUTODESK 123D CREATURE - Here is an alien character I just designed with the free Creature app for iPad.  I'm going to bring him into Maya next to see how well Creature and Maya work together. It is a rather diferent way to model characters. You start with the rig first by defining the bones, joints, and limbs. Then you flesh out the muscles and bake it. After that you can go back and forth between texturing and sculpting the character: http://www.123dapp.com/creature
GANGALEEN - I found another free app from AutoDesk for doing 3D modeling that is pretty cool. It's called 123D Sculpt and even does turntable animations of your creation. I call this snake-like creature Gangaleen. You can see more on the app at: http://www.123dapp.com/sculpt

Rigging Characters
Last Stand of the Samurai - This is a character I designed, modeled, rigged, UV mapped, textured, and animated for the Character Modeling & Rigging class.
This is a pair of legs that I created, rigged and animated for class with a simple rig configuration.
This was my first rig and I was still learning about tangents and how to make things look natural.
2D Animation
SHOWDOWN IN CLOWNTOWN - This is a 2D Flash animated short I made for Digital Ink and Paint class at the Art Institute of Virginia Beach.
SQUEAKERS & CREEPERS ANIMATIC - I led the creative team on this project at the Art Insititute to create "Squeakers And Creepers" as an animatic (rough stroytelling early animation) for an exercise in the Principals of 2D Animation class. I laid things out using ToonBoom.
CAT 'N RAT ANIMATIC - This animatic was done as a team project for Storyboarding class at The Art Institute of Virginia Beach.  My primary contribution was in assembling the drawings, video editing, sound effects, and music.
DRAGON HEX ANIMATIC - This is an animatic team project I produced for the Audio for Animation and Gaming class at the Art Institute of Virginia Beach. Find out what happens when the mystic Wispera journeys into the enchanted Cimmerian Forest and enters the Mei Long Cave, where lurks the dragon Draco. Many thanks to the talented Miguel Jordan, Brandon Morris, Kaitlyn Hawver, Victoria Beales, and Mitch Shoenemann for their help.
Eggs In Boots Tweens - School exercise for inbetweening walk cycle.  I did this drill for 2D animation class at the Art Institute using Toon Boom Harmony.
Jumper Tweens - This is a tween exercise I animated by creating inbetween frames at the Art Institute.
Blob n Blinda - 2D Animation done for class project on pulling a lever for the Art Institute of Virginia Beach, where I am studying Media Arts & Animation.

Caricatures
WHOOPI PART ONE - I drew this caricature of Whoopi Goldberg freehand with pencil and paper.

WHOOPI PART TWO - Digital cleanup version of Whoopi Goldberg caricature.

WHOOPI PART THREE - Whoopi Goldberg caricature in final colorized digital version in Adobe Photoshop.

THE GEOMINATI - These are my first caricatures, which I did for my Geometry class final project with a comic book about a fictional group I call the Geominati.

PAGE 1 - From Geominati comic I created.

PAGE 2 - From Geominati comic I created.
RAMBONING - This was a drawing I did to illustrate a retired U.S. Air Force pilot battling a terrorist in a fight to get back his kidnapped daughter.  It was part of a storyboard series, but I really like the way it turned out for this panel in particular.
ANIMATOR - I did a caricature of my instructor (David March) with a bit of exageration and influence from the film Rin Tin Tin.

Luciano Pavarotti - I drew a caricature of this Italian operatic tenor on paper and then traced it out with Adobe Photoshop as part of my Character & Environment Design classes.

CARL ICAHN - I drew this sketch of the American businessman and investor who has been in the news lately. I liked the whimsical handling of a serious business look in this drawing.  This was drawn with Adobe Ideas using an iPad.

Drawing (Characters & Environments)
AUDIO TRACK WITH CHARACTER CONCEPTS. The Baku-San story was inspired by Japanese and Chinese folklore with original characters and story by David Fliesen.  Voices and foley by Kaitlyn Hawver (Ayumi), Lujan Welch (Baku), and Grandfather (David Fliesen). Sound effects and music provided by FirstCom. Audio track created for Audio for Games and Animation class at the Art Institute of Virginia Beach.I may later do a full short on this story later.
FUNERAL PARLOR - This was an interesting assignment too.  I had to show a mortician in a small rural town preparing a room for a funeral service.

STORM @ SEA - For an assignment on depicting a storm at sea, I went for something a bit more apocalyptic like the end-of-the-world type movies from recent years and used silhouettes for the sailors on the bridge.

JACKSMITH PAGE 1 - This was done as a story treatment for the tale about a blacksmith and his customer.  I decided to make my characters a bit different by using animals with the Jacksmith (donkey) and Orlando Owl.  I learned a lot on this assignment, especially about the importance of using reference material when you draw and doing good research before you start.

JACKSMITH PAGE 2 - The second page of this storyboard treatment about the Jacksmith and his customer Orlando Owl.

Paintings (Acrylic Gouache & Digital)
THE WORDS OF GANDHI - Here is typography Art which I designed at the Art Institute of Virginia Beach using the words of Gandhi to paint his image. My initial sketches were done in vector with Adobe Ideas for iPad and then brought to Illustrator via the Adobe Cloud to use for developing outlines for text placement. I learned a lot about using kerning and tracking to balance out character spacing.
SELF PORTRAIT WITH MONOCHROMATIC BROWNS - This is a self portrait I did in December 2013 using a monochromatic brown color harmony. I was going for something a bit more abstract with an armadillo like coat, starry eyes and Indian Jones style hat. This was an interpretive work that built from an earlier self portrait I did at the Art Institute Online in 2010.

MERMAIDEN - This is a digital painting I did using Adobe Ideas on iPad app.  I was going for something a bit playful with an abstract look.

BLUE NUBIST - I drew this using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop in preparation for one of my artist inspired works in Color Theory class.  It is my first cubist nudist work.

SPIDER COLOR WHEEL - This was done with gauche acrylic to represent the color wheel as part of my color theory classes.

STEAMY NIGHT - This was my first painting with acrylics on paper. It was used for an assessment of my painting abilities at the beginning of a Color Theory class in October 2013 at the Art Insitute of Virginia Beach.  I did a steampunk version of Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night with a bit of inspiration from the musical group Steam Powered Giraffe's lead singer David Michael Bennett.

Virtual Worlds
I also developed several sims in virtual worlds of Second Life, OpenSimulator, and Cloud Party in 2013.  Here are two particular ones I would like to highlight:
STEAMPUNKABLES - This started with my modeling of the Tinker character and grew into a story-based hunt sim in the virtual world of Second Life.  It included a number of characters and locations which I designed and developed in Second Life under a grant from the Linden Endowment for the Arts (LEA) on the LEA23 sim in Second Life and was open from Aug-DEC 2013. Additional photos of the build are online at: http://steampunkables.wordpress.com/photos
EDGAR ALLAN POE METASTORY - This was developed for Cloud Party’s 1 year anniversary.  Photos of the sim build are online at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/93208837@N02/
