2022 NASA Science Calendar and Key Artwork

This feminine face of exploration, composited with the beautiful swirling textures of Earth’s biologically rich waters, looks beyond the Moon to future discoveries. The profile also provides a connection to the Agency’s Artemis program, which will put the first woman on the Moon. In celebration of Landsat’s 50th anniversary in 2022, she is composited from imagery of phytoplankton in the coastal waters off of Argentina, captured by Landsat 8 in January of 2021. Water, a vital life-sustaining force, is a fitting symbol of humanity and the interconnectivity of science. From understanding Earth’s changing climate to detecting lunar deposits to fueling human exploration, NASA science lights the way!

As two children open the treasure chest of discovery, auroras swirl out to fill the sky with wonder. They stream past the moon and onward toward a distant star. The soft glowing green and blue curtains emulate the water textures on the cover.

The journey over the past year has been a winding road—through the trials of the pandemic to political unrest—but this road also leads us toward a brighter future, full of new discoveries. The green and blue auroral curtains coalesce to form a winged symbol of hope.
