Creative Direction, cover artwork & video creation for 49 North Records & Duncan Forbes
Design and creative direction for the 1st 3EPs from newly formed 49North records' releases.
This project started with the brand creation and identity of the record label, for which I created a bespoke font, followed by full length videos for 3 singles, and then the cover art for the EPs and the subsequent 30 and 15 sec videos to be used as promos on SM.
Duncan Forbes is a recording artist, who, as 1/2 of the legendary band Spooky, shot to fame in the early 1990s as one of the core bands in what was then (and still is) called "Progressive House" music and techno - and they toured with the likes of Aphex Twin, Leftfield and Orbital, to name a few.
49 North records is Duncan's new solo work and I am his "art department" covering: identity, website, cover artwork & video creation.
Being "Old School" myself in terms of design I wanted to combine the futuristic elements of the concept of techno with something tangible and real. I had developed a custom font for another client initially, but have taken it far, far further for this project creating a 4 weight typeface which I've called IFC Sans (and which will be commercially available very soon) and then I got out the oil paints, painted onto glass the numbers of each EP - (this is 1 and 2 - we go up to 24 by the way!) then photographed them, smudged them, re-photographed them and have then overlaid and mixed them with the video footage I'd already created.
