The Green Dot symbol redesign

Name: The Green Dot
Industry: Recycling
Location: Europe
Specialisations: Design strategy, symbol design, motion design.

Problem:

Since 1970, arrows chasing in a cycle has meant recycle or recycled. In 1990, The Green Dot adopted the same graphic motif, with a different meaning.

Regularly confused with the recycling symbol, it does not mean the product is recyclable and is causing wide spread confusion and resulting in huge amounts of recycling contamination.

True symbol meaning:

A financial contribution has been made by the brand or company to a recycling system and the recovery of waste in Europe. It merely means a brand or company has joined The Green Dot scheme.

Solution:

I redesigned The Green Dot logo with the idea of contribution and participation of the brand or company into the EU recycling scheme.

So, my redesign presents:

• A circle symbolising the recycling scheme and the European Union;
• The fluid filling up meaning the recycling cause helped here by ↓;
• The arrow being the brand or company contributing to the cause.

The actual The Green Dot symbol, and my redesign next to it.

With such a simple yet efficient graphical identity, the goal of this redesign was also to keep the versatility and ease of use of the original symbol. A circle, an arrow and some waves: anyone could memorize this symbol easily.

It is simple but meaningful, making it a great possible replacement to the actual symbol, its outdated colours and usability flaws, currently in use all throughout the European Union.
