Given the theme "measurement," Antonio Ono, Danny Kaufman, and I
designed Decimate, a game that consists of using a limited number of playing pieces to build a "blob."
The goal is to reach the starting point of the opponent while preventing the opponent from reaching one's own.
Because the theme lent itself to few strong visual associations,
we started the project by brainstorming and building very minimalist prototypes.
Some ideas included building towers and traversing maps.
As we iterated more, we paid attention to preventing stalemate through using different boards and rules.
We also further incorporated the measurement theme. Most pieces, in metric units, fit perfectly to the grid.
A few pieces in imperial units made making moves in gameplay more challenging and less tedious.
