JAPANESE NOTAN:

Notan means, "light and dark". The goal for this assignment was to create a Japanese Notan design with construction paper and glue, that is not only entertaining to look at, but also gives a pleasing sense of balance.

PROCESS:
I brainstormed 20 ideas, and chose 16 of my favorite. I then made 2.5 x 2.5 square thumbnails to illustrate my ideas inside. Pictured above are 3 of my 16 thumbnails.

FINAL PRODUCT:
Above shown is my final symmetric notan design of a house, clouds, a crescent moon and bird sitting on a tree branch. I redrew my chosen design on a 5"x5” square of black paper and used an x-acto knife to carefully cut out my final design. Finally, I glued my notan on white paper.
