15 Years of CMU Homepages

I've helped redesign every iteration of CMU's homepage since 2007. It was built in a CMS that uses XML, XSLT, and Apache Velocity. At that time, it also used ActionScript 2 (Flash). Gasp! I have no screenshots of that version. Sorry!

After the iPhone launched, we redid the Flash version using HTML. This is before responsive design was a thing.
Finally in 2015, we were given the opportunity to redesign it in a mobile-friendly way. The graphic designers, web designers (that's me), and videographer work on the design together. For a Frankenstein design, it looked pretty good! Then I coded the entire thing by overriding the CSS and hacking the template code.
In 2016, we released new CMS templates that mimicked homepage design, then we relaunched the homepage to showcase the power and beauty of the new templates.
In 2019, we jazzed it up a bit more in a quick, three-month homepage refresh. This fast-paced project involved every designer, developer, multimedia person, and director on our team. I crafted all the HTML and CSS, animated logos and graphics, and more. Mind you, this is still the system from 2007 using XML, XSLT, and Apache Velocity.
Watch me walk through the 2019 redesign in the video below.
